Meditation on Those that are Loved Prior to Death
The Spiritual Travel Logo

Preparation for death involves detaching one's self from the many attachments generated during ones life. Meditation on the people, places, and things that were loved during one's life is one stage of preparation.

The meditation goes as follows.

As the time of death approaches, the dying person should think of all the people he or she has loved during life. Each person is loved in a different way. The person should think of love as a child and love as an adult, of love that is idealistic and love that is pragmatic, and love that is freely given and love that is obligatory. The person should also think of places and things that were loved. The goal is not to create attachment but rather to understand, acknowledge, and honor the love that was given.

In additional, the person should think of what he or she leaves behind to the people that are loved. By legal will or through conversations, the dying person should make sure each person learns of the gifts they are being given. The people being left behind should be told that they were loved or appreciated.

When all loves have been made conscious, the dying person should bid them farewell. This is a verbal and emotional goodbye for people and places and things. In this process, the person should strive to leave the physical world on good terms.

The person should then cast his or her love to the heavens to look forward to a new and eternal love whether in the form of the worship of a god or goddess, or in seeking a world of pure consciousness, spiritual light, enlightenment, and spiritual freedom.
